Exercise leggings

Yoga pants, leggings, exercise leggings…whatever you may call them. Yoga, exercise, everyday wear…whatever you may use them for. Either way you know there’s good ones and bad ones out there.

If you use them for the purpose intended, some may work with you, others not so much. It can be very annoying when you have to keep tugging on your attire while working out. I realize a good pair is worth the money but I refuse to spend a hundred dollars on leggings.

The fabric is key. Spandex will keep its shape even when washed a lot. Also look for moisture wick fabrics such as polyester and nylon. The word polyester may make you shudder but they don’t make it like they used to. Even synthetic fabrics can feel soft to touch and comfortable to wear. It’s come a long way!

Compression leggings may be the way to go for you when you’re a runner or love cardio, since they provide more support for your legs. They are not only great for serious athletes and runners but also for traveling, since they improve circulation in your legs. My pick for compression leggings are by Avalanche. I found my latest pair at Marshals for around $20.00. They were the best solution for a recent 8 hour flight. I could actually feel the circulation in my legs.

My favorite overall pick for any activity are Iuga high waisted leggings. They have pockets, which I love. The high waistband has a bit of tummy control but in a subtle way. Not constricting like some shapers. I bought mine from Amazon for $25.00. They also hold their shape after many work outs and washes.

My favorite fashionable leggings are from Assets by Spanx for Target. No worries, they are a third of the price of regular Spanx. They are not ideal whatsoever for exercising or traveling but perfect for looking great in a slightly constrained way. They are considered shape wear and that’s exactly what they do. I own the ponte version as well as the faux leather one. Love them equally.

My motto about a decade ago was “leggings are not pants” but I have a had a complete change of heart since then. In my defense, they were not a trend yet and we only had the cotton shapeless ones to work with. I am fascinated with the leggings that shape your butt and have certain seams and lines that create a fantastic optical illusion. I have tried the butt seam ones but they were not comfortable plus I felt a bit exposed. A solid wedgie will give the same effect.

One piece of advice in any legging scenario: wear the right underwear. Check your rear end in a mirror before leaving your house, feel free to bend over or squat to take note of the effect. Everything may look ok when standing straight up. You will thank me later!
