Root touch up

It’s an uphill battle: the battle of the grays. And I’m not ready to wave the white flag just yet. I get my hair professionally dyed every 5 weeks but since my hair grows so fast, I reach for root touch ups after 2 weeks or so.

Overall I embrace this aging thing but let me have this one. My hairdresser yells at me when I reach for “the box” in between visits. And with this I mean the hair dye box. It messes up her artwork therefore I have found a few other solutions. Some good, some bad and a few amazes.

I will start with a good. It looks like an amped up mascara wand. That reminds me that some do actually use mascara for root cover up, but I haven’t tried that yet. This root touch up is great for those pesty little hairs in your side burns, or if you’re trying to cover grays close to the root. It does feel a little sticky after application. I’m careful to touch it or put my readers on top of my head when I use this stuff. It is also great for parts especially when you’re pulling your hair back in a slick ponytail. Which I do quite often. The one I like is called No Gray Quick Fix for $12.95.

The bad; is my experience with the powder. Maybe I’m not doing it right but it is not great for roots and that’s what it is technically meant for right? It does not seem to cover my hair but will show on my skin. The opposite would be more effective. I’m usually the bearer of good news only since I don’t like to put products in a negative light but since this brand represents both the bad and the awesome, I’ll share my findings. Clarion Root Touch Up Powder; not a fan.

The awesome: Clairol Root Touch-Up spray for less than $10 on Amazon. The one down side of this product that I will mention is the powerful spray. Be prepared to get blasted. But not to worry too much, it somehow does not stick to skin. What it does do is magically cover the grays. Even better: it is waterproof and even lasts through a wash. As crazy as that may sound, even the brand claims it washes out but I beg to differ. I like this stuff best on days when I leave my hair down. There’s a variety on the market that adds color and volume but I feel as if this already achieves the same result. I am a fan.

Lastly, thanks to my Allure Box, I received a travel size of a higher priced root touch up spray by Style Edit. A full size will set you back $30, which is still cheaper than a professional dye job. Something about color-adaptive pigment in this product that self adjust to color match your hair. Well, once again, I should have known better not to try this right before an important event. It did spray on in an almost reddish hue but adjusted to my hair color shortly thereafter. Which was as promised. My scalp, however, remained reddish. It also made my hair feel rope like and slightly sticky. Sadly, I have to give another thumbs down. As always, I will add, something’s are not for everyone. This may very well work miracles on different hair types and colors. In this case it’s tested on thin, pin straight hair.

Long story short: I am sticking with my Clairol spray. Curiosity always gets the best of me!
