Aaaaaand we are back to collagen!! Yes we produce less of it as we age…yadayadayaaa…..and yes there are creams and lotions out there that claim to actually restore the elasticity in your skin. But how about actually taking collagen supplements?

Achaaa! Something else to try. Collagen supplements are hydrolyzed peptides that are broken down from the collagen found in animals. The bone and flesh of animals to be exact. Ok all vegans are on their own….oh no my bad there are plant based collagen supplements out there. That sounds better to me as well!

Collagen is like the glue that holds your body together therefore taking supplements can be beneficial for your skin as well as your joints. Both men and women supposedly benefit from it. In other ways too…keep reading! The list of benefits is long; it claims to even help prevent Alzheimer’s. But I will stick with the smaller things like easing IBS and other digestive problems, back pains and symptoms of arthritis.

You should know by now that I am not the most consistent person but I have managed to swallow these enormous pills down for about a week. Not so much over the past few days but what is a clear fact to me is that it does make your finger nails grow and yes your digestive system will thank you. I will try to continue to take collagen supplements but my next batch will be in powder form or liquid…just add it to my morning coffee, and I will be good to go…in more than one way.

I have to get technical for a minute. There are different types of collagen. Type 1 and 3 are often found together. Type 1 deals with skin, tendons, organs and bones. Type 3 will tackle your vascular system and eyes. Type 2 works best for joint pain. Type 4 and 5 are less common but they respectively deal with the filtration system of you kidneys, hair and placenta…

Two other facts I read about that are good to know; collagen in lotions are a waste of money. Collagen molecules are too big to be absorbed by your skin…mmmm….Secondly; Vitamin C. If you have a Vitamin C deficiency your body will not be able to produce collagen….fun fact right?!
